November 26 Power Rankings

Maybe they still were sluggish from big meals on Thursday, but a brutal 1-5 Saturday by Ivy teams ruined what was setting up to be a decent week for the league. Between the injury woes affecting some programs and the opportunities squandered by a number of teams, we understand why some Ivy coaches might not be feeling particularly thankful right about now.

1. Penn (3-2) 1 Tuesday’s blowout win over a solid Drexel team picked to challenge for the Colonial title was huge for Penn — the second best win by an Ivy team so far this season. It provided some validation for a team that didn’t look great in Syracause or against FGCU.
2. Princeton (3-1) 3 Coming off a mini-layoff, the Tiger offense looked lethargic in an anemic 14-point first half at Manhattan. But whatever Joe Scott said or drew up in the locker room at halftime seemed to do the trick, as Princeton exploded for 43 points in the second half.
3. Columbia (4-2) 2 After dominating 90-63 win over LIU on Tuesday, Columbia had an opportunity for its third-straight start of 5-1 or better. However, an improved Stony Brook squad had a different agenda, and the Lions wilted under the defensive pressure from the Seawolves.
Cornell (3-2) 4 Despite injuries to Jason Hartford and Adam Gore, the Big Red also had a chance to get off to a strong start after Tuesday’s win at Army. There’s no shame in losing at Binghamton, but Cornell lost out on a chance to start out 4-1 for the first time in a decade.
5. Harvard (2-3) 7 For 36 minutes on Tuesday, Harvard looked great, giving an undefeated Holy Cross team all it could handle. While things got out of hand late, the Crimson bounced back nicely on Saturday against Lehigh, making big plays down the stretch to hold for the win.
6. Yale (1-3) 5 The Bulldogs had a pair of respectable losses on their Ohio roadtrip and gave Bucknell a decent battle, but now it’s time for them to win some games. Losing to Patriot League teams at home doesn’t bode well for a team’s chances of contending in the league.
7. Brown (1-5) 5 After the blowout at Northwestern and home loss to Army, the huge upset of Providence is looking more and more like an aberration. Still, it’s a sign that on a given night when it all comes together, this is a team that is capable of pulling off a surprise.
8. Dartmouth (0-5) 8 With four potential starters out, if there’s any team in college basketball that’s been hit harder by the injury bug, we’d like to see it. The silver lining to all of this is that it’s going to very tough to prepare for Dartmouth when it does get back to full strength.
