Keys to the Game
Key sequence Johnathan Ball put Dartmouth on the board with a layup on the Big Green’s first possession of the game. Terry Dunn’s squad then went into a deep offensive funk, missing its next 14 shots and committing five turnovers during a scoreless stretch that lasted over 12 minutes. When Vincent Aldevinge dunked with 7:51 left in the first half, Hartford had scored 15 straight points and led by 13. DeVon Mosley finally stopped the Big Green bleeding with a jumper on the next Dartmouth possession.
Key sign it was over The Big Green trailed by just seven points after two Alex Barnett free throws with 2:44 left. Alex Zimnickas hit one of two at the line to make it 53-45, but Dartmouth had trouble getting an open look. DeVon Mosley ended up taking a three-pointer with the shot clock down under 10, and couldn’t find the bottom of the net. Hartford then ran the shot clock all the way down before Michael Turner drilled a three-pointer to push the margin up to 11 with 1:32 left. Dartmouth again couldn’t get a shot off quickly, and when Brandon Ware misfired on a three-pointer just 63 seconds left, the Hawks added to their lead at the line. It was a done deal when .
Key performance Jason Meyer had a strong game in a losing cause, scoring a game-high 18 points. The senior was instrumental in the Big Green’s second-half comeback, as all of his points came after halftime. Meyer shot 8 of 10 from the floor in the second half — including 2 of 3 from deep — as Dartmouth made Hartford sweat out its first win of the season.
Key statistic Dartmouth shot just 4 of 26 (15.4 percent) in the first half and trailed 31-13 at intermission. And that was with layups on its first and last possessions of the half. Not even a good offensive second half was enough to save the Big Green from its fifth loss in five games.
Notes

– Zimnickas was the top scorer for the victorious Hawks with 13 points, while Bo Taylor added 12 and 10.

– Dartmouth’s 13 points in the first half were its lowest scoring output in a half this season and the program’s worst offensive half under Dunn.

– The Big Green played without four potential starters, as Leon Pattman (high ankle sprain), Dan Biber (broken wrist), Marlon Sanders (unspecified knee injury), and Brian MacMillan (broken nose) all were sidelined.

– Barnett had a rough afternoon from the field, missing all seven field goal attempts.

– Dartmouth did manage to get the better of Hartford in the turnover department, forcing 12 turnovers while committing 11.

– The Big Green almost certainly is going to have to wait to pick up that elusive first win of 2006-07, as a game at 10th-ranked Kansas looms next on Tuesday, November 28, at 8:00 pm ET on ESPN Full Court.
