Keys to the Game
Key sequence Navy hit its first six shots from the field, while Brown misfired on its first five, as the Midshipmen ran out to a 14-3 lead. Midshipmen Trey Stanton and Greg Sprink both showed their versatility in that stretch with a dunk and a three-pointer by each of them.
Key sign it was over Leading 38-21 at intermission, Navy held Brown to just one point in the first 7:25 of the second half. By the time freshman Steve Gruber got the Bears their first bucket of the second half, the Midshipmen lead had swelled to 47-22.
Key performance Despite foul problems that limited him to 23 minutes, Stanton led all scorers with 16 points. He hit 5 of 7 shots — including 2 of 3 from deep — and also recorded two rebounds and two assists without committing a turnover.
Key statistic Navy’s 14-for-21 (66.7 percent) first-half shooting. The Midshipmen scorched the nets at Show Place Arena in the first 20 minutes, including eight three-pointers in 15 attempts from beyond the arc. Conversely, Brown could manage only 4-for-16 (25.0 percent) shooting in the first half.
Notes

– Keenan Jeppesen broke out of an early season slump with 14 points to lead Brown. Jeppsen had scored just 13 total points in Brown’s first two games.

– Brown got 19 of its 47 points at the free throw line, where it had a big edge. The Bears shot 30 free throws, compared to just eight for Navy.

– Navy actually committed more turnovers (19) than Brown (16), but the Mids badly outscored the Bears in points off turnovers, 22-10.

– The big second-half lead allowed Navy coach Billy Lange to give his bench some minutes, with 14 players appearing and all 14 logging five or more minutes of action.

– In a halftime interview on Brown’s radio broadcast, injured starter Damon Huffman revealed that his injury was not an ACL tear as feared, and that he hoped to make his return before the holiday break.

– Brown returns to Providence for a crosstown showdown with Providence at the Dunkin Donuts Center on Saturday, November 18, at 7:30 pm ET.
