Illinois F Monckton is third Penn recruit

ChicagoHoops.com reports Dan Monckton of Glenbrook South High School in Glenview, IL, has given a verbal commitment to Penn. The article states that the 6-6 wing chose the Quakers over offers from Brown, Princeton, and Eastern Illinois. He was a teammate of Columbia freshman Kevin Bulger last season on a team that went 24-5. Also a talented wide receiver on the football team, Monckton is extremely athletic and plays above the rim.

Slant: The word from those who have seen Monckton play is that he’s a natural athlete, but still is working on becoming — as Fran Dunphy likes to say — a “basketball player.” He does appear to be a good fit with Miller’s uptempo style, which means his skill level really is the main question at this point.

Monckton’s commitment leaves one or two spots in Glen Miller’s first recruiting class for post players. The Quakers lost out on Tim Abromaitis, who committed to Notre Dame this week, which means this weekend looms large for Miller and his staff. Penn is hosting a number of key frontcourt prospects for official visits — including highly regarded power forward Josh Owens, who is expected to decide between offers from Penn, Stanford, and Vanderbilt in early November.
