Brown freshmen J.J. Anderson and Matt Jones are not listed on the roster in the school’s first weekly game notes release, and a source close to the program confirms the two players left the team back in October. Anderson is a 6-4 wing from Del Mar, CA, while Jones is a 6-5 swingman from San Raphael, CA. Their departures leave the Bears with 13 players — and three freshmen — on the roster.
Slant: With the adjustment to life away from home and the academic demands on their time in the Ivy League, it’s not uncommon for one or two incoming freshmen to hang up their hightops without playing a game in their college careers. That said, Robinson’s 5:30 am practices might have made early retirement a much more appealing option in these two cases. Considering their freshmen hallmates were going to bed around the same time the basketball players would have to get up for practice, this seems to be asking an awful lot of first-year players.
In terms of the impact on the program, Anderson didn’t appear to be on his way to any real minutes this season and his prospects for playing time down the road were cloudy at best. Jones was the most highly publicized member of Brown’s Class of 2010, but his lack of a jumpshot was a liability in Robinson’s offense. Still, he could have fit into a slashing role similar to what Will Venable carved out at Princeton under John Thompson III.
