NJHoops.com is reporting that Kyle Fitzgerald has given a verbal commitment to Frank Sullivan’s Harvard program. The 6-5 Red Bank, NJ, native averaged 16.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per contest as a junior and was named to the B North First Team. Fitzgerald becomes the first high school senior in the Ivy League’s recruiting class of 2007.
Slant: Fitzgerald is going to face a challenge converting from a high school power forward to a college wing. Sullivan recruited a similar player out of New Jersey a few years ago in Zach Martin. While Martin eventually developed into a decent role player off the Crimson bench, he proved to be a “tweener” — too undersized to play extensive minutes at power forward and too slow to defend opposing wings as a small forward. Ultimately, Fitzgerald’s prospects for major playing time at the collegiate level will depend on his quickness and outside shooting ability.
