Sources close to both Penn and Brown coach Glen Miller indicate Penn athletic director Steve Bilsky is set to name Miller the next men’s basketball coach at Penn. A press conference is scheduled for Wednesday, at which time Miller will be introduced. The decision comes after two-plus weeks of searching and interviewing candidates to succeed Fran Dunphy, who departed for Temple back on April 10. Miller was rumored to be Bilsky’s choice early on in the search, but Lehigh’s Billy Taylor had been considered the favorite up until Monday and Cornell’s Steve Donahue also was reported to be in the mix. Miller comes to Penn with a 93-99 overall record in seven seasons at Brown — 54-44 in the league. Brown athletic director Mike Goldberger will now begin his search for a replacement.
Slant: It’s not unprecedented for a coach to jump from one conference rival to another, but it’s certainly not a regular occurrence. If Fran O’Hanlon would have been a slam dunk hire for Penn, Miller is a wide-open look at a three-pointer — somewhat risky, but with a very high ceiling. He’s as good a tactician as the Ivy League has seen in years and has built winners at each of his two previous stops. Miller favors an uptempo style and a deep rotation that is bound to go over well with the Penn faithful, and his program has improved defensively almost every season. Penn fans may associate Miller with his infamous postgame tirade at The Palestra three years ago, but he has toned down his act considerably in recent years. The biggest concerns about Miller are the 60-percent attrition rate in his program at Brown and his inability to maintain the level of his program at Brown the last couple of years. He will be asked to do the latter at Penn, which has represented the Ivy League in the NCAA Tournament six of the last eight years.
As for Brown, current assistant Kevin Jaskiewicz probably will be a candidate to take over the program, along with successful Division III coaches if the school elects to go that route again.
