Keys to the Game
Key sequence Brian Cusworth missed the second of two free throws with Harvard up five and 3:07 left. The rebound took a wild carom out to Columbia’s Brett Loscalzo, who got out in front of the Harvard defense. But Loscalzo couldn’t hit the layup, and Drew Housman found Matt Stehle, who had leaked out against the flow of the play. Stehle dunked to put the Crimson up seven. At the other end, Dragutin Kravic got inside for a layup to make it a five-point game again, but Housman hit two free throws to restore the Harvard margin to seven. Justin Armstrong missed a three-pointer at the other end, and the officials awarded the ball to the Crimson out of bounds. At the other end Jim Goffredo drilled a three-pointer to put Harvard up by double digits.
Key sign it was over Beal put Harvard up five with a free throw with 33 seconds left. It took Columbia 15 seconds to get off a three-pointer, and John Baumann was unable to connect. Loscalzo grabbed the rebound and took a three of his own that ended up in Beal’s hands and the Harvard senior again hit one of two to make it a six-point game. Baumann didn’t get off a three-pointer until just four seconds remained. At the point it didn’t matter when Kravic grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Kravic hit both free throws, and Harvard eventually inbounded the ball, ending Columbia’s chances.
Key performance Goffredo’s 22-point night. It wasn’t a great all-around night for the Harvard sniper, with zeroes in every other stat column except rebounds (one) and turnovers (three), but Goffredo got good looks from the arc and knocked down 5 of 9 from the outside. He was the spark in Harvard’s run after Columbia stormed back to take a second half lead. The junior scored 10 of Harvard’s 12 points during the spurt that put the Crimson on top for good and hit the huge three-pointer to give his team a late double-digit lead.
Key statistic Harvard’s 8-for-20 three-point shooting. It was just the fifth time all season the Crimson shot 40.0 percent or better in a game. Zach Martin got things started with a pair of three-pointers in the opening minutes and then Goffredo heated up late in the half, helping Harvard to a 10-point lead at the break. The Crimson cooled off after halftime, missing its first five three-point attempts of the second half, but Goffredo got hot again late, and it proved to be the key to the victory.
Notes
Ben Nwachuwu and Justin Armstrong tied for team high-scoring honors for Columbia with 13 points each.
The Lions dominated the offensive glass, grabbing 18 of 40 rebounds at their end of the court (45.0 percent). Columbia turned those 18 offensive rebounds into 21 second-chance points, compared to just four for Harvard — who rebounded at just 26.9 percent offensively.
Stehle went out in style, with the win and perhaps his best game in the last three weekends with 16 points, four rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and a steal.
Columbia forced 19 Harvard turnovers and outscored the Crimson 17-6 in points off turnovers.
Frank Sullivan didn’t get much of a contribution from his bench once again, as the Harvard reserves scored just five points. By contrast, Joe Jones got 20 points out of his bench.
Baumann had a rough night for Columbia, scoring just nine points on 3-for-11 shooting and finishing with as many turnovers (five) as rebounds. Armstrong didn’t shoot much better (4 of 15), but did grab 10 rebounds and dish out seven assists.
Columbia did not fare well from three three-point arc, hitting just 6 of 24 (25.0 percent) from distance. Reserve guards K.J. Matsui and Kashif Sweet combined to hit 3 of 4, while the rest of the team was just 3 of 20 from three.
With the win, Harvard avoided last place, finishing sixth at 5-9 in the league. Columbia was not as fortunate, winding up in the Ivy cellar for the second straight season, tied with Dartmouth for seventh place at 4-10 in the league.
