Keys to the Game
Key sequence Damon Huffman’s jumper 21 seconds into the second half gave Brown a 15-point lead, but Princeton used a 7-1 run to draw within nine. But Huffman responded with a three-pointer to push the margin back to double digits, where it would stay the rest of the game.
Key sign it was over After two Scott Greenman free throws cut Princeton’s deficit to 15 with just over five minutes left, the Tigers turned over the ball on four straight possessions. When Marcus Becker hit two free throws with 3:31 left, Brown had its largest lead of the game at 57-38 and Princeton’s dreams of a miracle Ivy title were dashed.
Key performance Brown’s Keenan Jeppesen led all scorers with 16 points. The sophomore is putting himself in consideration for First Team All-Ivy honors, and could only have helped his cause tonight with 7-of-13 shooting from the field and five steals.
Key statistic Take your pick: Princeton’s 21 turnovers or its 3-of-18 three-point shooting. The Tigers entered the game near the top of the league in turnover percentage (19.2 percent) and three-point shooting (40.4 percent) in Ivy games, but you wouldn’t have known that from the performance at Brown. Princeton committed turnovers on a whopping 37.5 percent of its possessions and shot just 16.7 percent from the arc in the loss.
Notes
The game was a dramatic turnaround from the two teams’ previous meeting in Princeton, where the Tigers completely shut down Brown offensively and won the game far more easily than the 15-point final margin suggested.
Luke Owings led Princeton with 13 points, while Greenman added 12. However, Greenman attempted just five shots on the night.
Princeton bench did not score, while Brown got 14 points from its reserves.
Brown turned the 21 Princeton turnovers into 23 points, outscoring the Tigers 23-10 in points off turnovers.
The matchup featured a team that had been making its hay offensively by getting to the line (Brown) and one that had been battling a habit of putting opponents on the line (Princeton). Brown shot 28 free throws, compared to 17 for Princeton.
With the win, Brown guaranteed itself a better record than last season’s 5-9 mark in Ivy play. With an upset of Ivy champion Penn on Saturday in front of the YES Network cameras, the Bears could finish .500 in the league.
