This week’s Power Rankings were a difficult task after a crazy weekend that saw the underdogs go 6-2 against the favorites. The bottom three teams in the league going into the weekend went 4-0 against the top five, including home sweeps by one-win Columbia and Dartmouth squads.

1. | Penn (16-7, 8-1 Ivy) | 1 | It wasn’t shocking that Penn lost in the Empire State — only that it was Columbia and not Cornell who pulled it off. Zone defenses gave the Quakers fits in both weekend contests, and only Ibby Jaaber’s performance on Saturday saved Penn from getting swept. |
2. | Princeton (8-14, 6-3 Ivy) | 2 | Despite a 1-2 week that probably should have been 0-3, the Tigers stay in the second spot basically by default. After Scott Greenman led Princeton to another miracle win on Friday at Cornell, the Tigers’ good fortune finally ran out the next night in Manhattan. |
3. | Yale (14-11, 6-4 Ivy) | 3 | The Bulldogs probably don’t feel like the third-best team in the league after losing at Dartmouth, but they’re in third place in the standings. And Yale deserves some credit for winning easily at Harvard on Saturday to end an eight-game Ivy road losing streak. |
4. | Columbia (10-13, 3-7 Ivy) | 8 | The sweep of the Ps at Levien was a giant shot in the arm for a program that seemed to be headed downhill prior to this weekend. You won’t see any complaints now about Joe Jones’s coaching after his team executed excellent game plans in both games. |
5. | Cornell (10-14, 5-5 Ivy) | 4 | The Big Red would be 8-1 at this point were it not for buzzer-beaters by Columbia and Princeton and late runs by Yale and Penn. With Cornell eliminated from the title chase with five losses, the goal now becomes a repeat of last year’s runner-up finish. |
6. | Dartmouth (5-18, 3-7 Ivy) | 7 | Terry Dunn’s team had a big weekend at home, rallying in the second half to take down Yale, then leading almost all the way in a win over Brown. Suddenly the future is looking brighter for the young Big Green, which has now won three of its last five games. |
7. | Brown (8-15, 4-6 Ivy) | 6 | After back-to-back stellar offensive performances in wins over Columbia and Harvard, the Brown offensive attack bogged down against Dartmouth. With the loss to the Big Green, the Bears blew an opportunity to move into a tie for fourth place in the standings. |
8. | Harvard (12-11, 4-6 Ivy) | 5 | The team once considered the league’s top threat to Penn is now totally tanking after getting swept at home by Brown and Yale. After suffering their fifth straight loss, the Harvard players had a postgame team meeting in the locker room on Saturday night. |
