Keys to the Game
Key sequence Penn’s lead was just 9-8 until an Ibby Jaaber highlight reel performance triggered an 11-0 run. After a pair of Steve Danley free throws, Jaaber stripped Dartmouth’s DeVon Mosley near halfcourt and then windmill dunked on the freshman guard. Jaaber then blocked a Mosley breakaway layup before making a steal from Leon Pattman and dunking once again. After an easy bucket by Brian Grandieri, Jaaber capped the burst with a three-pointer that made it 20-11.
Key sign it was over Dartmouth was hanging around at 51-40 with just over 10 minutes remaining before the Quakers went on a 12-4 run to stretch the lead to 19 with 3:01 remaining. Eric Osmundson scored the last six points of the Penn run.
Key performance Jaaber was nothing short of huge with 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting, five steals, five rebounds, four assists, and a block. He was 2-for-2 from outside the arc, made his only foul shot and caused havoc at the top of the Dartmouth offense.
Key statistic Penn shot 52.6 percent from the field in the first half and then heated up with 57.7 percent in the second to finish the night at 55.6.
Notes
Dartmouth shot a woeful 29.0 percent from the field in the first half and 34.4 percent on the game.
Penn’s three-man starting backcourt of Jaaber, Osmundson, and David Whitehurst combined to score 49 points on 18-of-25 shooting, including 7 of 8 from three-point range.
The Quakers turned the ball over 19 times, their second-highest total of the season. With Dartmouth turning the ball over 18 times, the Quakers’ streak of 12 consecutive games with fewer turnovers than their opponents came to an end.
After drawing two fouls in just seven minutes of action in the first half, Dartmouth starting center Cal Arnold was called for two fouls in the first 1:12 of the second half. He played just 11 minutes. Paul Bode had 14 rebounds in 26 minutes off the bench for Dartmouth including six at the offensive end.
Penn has now beaten Dartmouth 18 consecutive times since the first game of the 1996-97 season when Dartmouth won 74-70 in overtime at the Palestra. Fran Dunphy is now 29-4 against Dartmouth.
With just four points, Penn post Steve Danley had his team-high, seven-game double-figure scoring streak snapped.
After playing 15 of its first 19 games on the road, Dartmouth now has six of eight at Leede Arena.
The late-arriving crowd was listed at 810, while the Dartmouth men’s hockey game against Quinnipiac drew 3,417.
