Fall orientation: part one

The college basketball offseason is always rife with change, but this summer felt like a particularly tumultuous one in the Ivy League. The exit of the dean of Ivy coaches back in April was a sign of things to come, as coaching staff and roster changes were widespread. In the first installment of a four-part series recapping this summer’s developments, we’ll begin by taking a look at the top news stories of the summer.

A look at potential Penn replacements

Fran Dunphy has moved on after 17 seasons, leaving Penn without a head coach. With one — and possibly two — of the obvious frontrunners for the job already out of the mix, expect to hear some interesting names bandied about by insiders and those engaged in pure speculation in the next week or two. Here’s a list of some of the names being floated by those close to the program along with some names that have popped up on the boards.

In other Ivy coaching news…

Temple’s courting of Fran Dunphy is getting all the atttention these days, but Penn isn’t the only Ivy whose coaching situation has been in the news lately. A move across town by Dunphy could start a domino effect with a couple of other Ivy school potentially involved. Meanwhile, one coach in the league has thrown his hat into the ring for at least one other job, another coach’s job security was assured for the time being, and a third Ivy coach turned down an opportunity elsewhere to stay put.
