Gamecenter: Harvard 74, Yale 82

Key sequence: Jim Goffredo hit a three-pointer to cap off a 7-0 Harvard run that cut Yale’s lead to 46-42 with under 14 minutes left, leading James Jones to call a 30-second timeout to regroup. Out of the timeout, Casey Hughes — an 18.3-percent three-point shooter the past two seasons — drilled a three-pointer to put the Bulldogs back up by seven. Three minutes later another Goffredo three trimmed the margin to five points, but Nick Holmes answered from beyond the arc at the other end to spark a 14-5 Yale, putting the Bulldogs in control with a 67-53 lead.

Yale rebounds, Brown wins a thriller, and Saturday action galore

Harvard’s chances of winning that elusive first Ivy title took a dent last night when the Crimson went down to Yale in New Haven. A little bit east on I-95, Brown and Dartmouth played for 50 minutes before the Bears escaped with the win. Now Saturday sees seven Ivy teams in action, including an elimination game in Providence and the final non-league game of the regular season.

Rivalry game also an elimination game for Yale

Tonight’s Harvard-Yale tilt will feature the only two teams that have shown themselves to have any realistic hopes of challenging Penn in the league this season. But after Yale’s disastrous loss at Brown last weekend, the Bulldogs can’t afford to drop another early Ivy contest, particularly at home against a fellow contender. Meanwhile, outside of the series with Penn, this is likely the only league game in which Harvard won’t be favored.

La Salle game a good test for Penn

After an eight-day layoff, Penn returns to action tonight when the Quakers host La Salle (10-6) at The Palestra. Both teams will be looking for their first Big 5 win of the season. Penn is favored both on paper and by seven points in Vegas, and should make it five straight wins over the Explorers. However, the game is interesting from an Ivy League perspective in that La Salle appears to be rather similar to Harvard, who appears to be Penn’s closest competition in the league.
