Brown loses pair of freshmen

Brown freshmen J.J. Anderson and Matt Jones are not listed on the roster in the school’s first weekly game notes release, and a source close to the program confirms the two players left the team back in October. Anderson is a 6-4 wing from Del Mar, CA, while Jones is a 6-5 swingman from San Raphael, CA. Their departures leave the Bears with 13 players — and three freshmen — on the roster.

Seven-footer Schmidt verbals to Brown

Craig Robinson picked up a big commitment — literally — when 7-0 center Evan Schmidt of Chesterton, IN, announced his decision to attend Brown next year. Prior to his junior year of high school, Schmidt had attracted the interest of a number of Big Ten programs. But after missing most of this past season due to injury, the high majors backed off and he switched high schools this summer, joining a talented Valparaiso team. Indiana Basketball News ranked Schmidt 30th among Indiana seniors in his July rankings. In an interview with The Northwest Times, the 2007 senior discussed his college decision, saying, “Academics is big for me; I’ve always had straight A’s. And I also get to play basketball.”

Penn recruiting class grows to four with Eggleston

Jack Eggleston of St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, FL, has committed to Penn. Eggleston had narrowed his list to Penn, Lafayette, and American and had taken official visits to all three schools in addition to a visit to Lehigh. He also attended prospect camps at Princeton and Columbia over the summer. Last year the 6-8 forward averaged 8.0 points and 8.7 rebounds per game for a team that went 20-8 and advanced to the Florida 5A regional semifinals.

Brown gets second Illinois wing commitment from Kane

Brown coach Craig Robinson continues to tap his recruiting connections in the Chicago area, as ChicagoHoops.com is reporting another commitment for the Bears. Sean Kane of Carmel Catholic High School in Mundelein, IL, chose Brown after visiting Dartmouth, Princeton, and Yale. The 6-5 wing won’t wow anyone with athleticism, but he is renowned for his shooting ability — particularly from long range.
