Quakers seeded 15th, draw Texas in Dallas

Penn received a 15 seed and will face Texas (27-5) on Friday, March 17 in Dallas. The Longhorns won the regular season Big 12 title, but lost to Kansas in the championship game of the Big 12 Tournament that was also played at American Airlines Center in Dallas — site of the First Round game. The winner of the Penn-Texas game will take on the winner of the California-North Carolina State 7-10 first-round matchup. Texas ranks fourth nationally in offensive efficiency at 1.13 points per possession and sixth defensively at 0.89 points per possession. Penn is 135th offensively (1.03 points per possession) and ninth defensively (0.90 points per possession). The time of the game will be announced in the coming days.

Lack of upsets makes Penn feel like a natural 15

Despite shooting itself in the foot with the loss at Princeton in the regular season finale, Penn still had a very good shot at a 14 seed — and even somewhat of a shot at a 13 seed — entering conference tournament play. The Ivy champ can generally count on upsets in conference tournaments to raise its seeding one or two spots, but there was no such help this year.

Gamecenter: Penn 59, Princeton 60 (OT)

Key sequence: With Penn on a 22-6 run to trim an 18-point deficit to just two, Eric Osmundson slipped inside, but couldn’t finish a layup attempt. Princeton appeared to be headed for a shot clock violation at the other end, until Kyle Koncz found Justin Conway at the top of the key for a huge three-pointer to stem the Quaker tide. At the other end, Penn got two great looks at open threes, but couldn’t knock down either one. Conway got inside position and drew the foul on the rebound, then hit both free throws to restore the Tiger margin to seven with under five minutes left in the second half. Penn would resume its run, outscoring Princeton 12-5 the rest of the way in regulation, so Conway’s one-man 5-0 spurt almost certainly saved Princeton from losing the game in regulation.
