Keys to the Game
Key sequence Drew Housman came up with a steal and drove in for a layup to break a 47-47 tie, then Goffredo did the same on the very next possession. Incredibly, Andrew Pusar matched their feats with a steal and fastbreak bucket to complete a wild 42-second sequence. Brian Cusworth came up with a fourth consecutive steal, but Pusar turned it over in transition. Long Island couldn’t take advantage of a number of good looks at the other end before Cusworth eventually controlled the rebound. Goffredo drilled a three to push Harvard’s lead to 56-47. James Williams turned it over on the Blackbirds’ next possession, but atoned for that mistake with a steal from Cusworth and an asisst on a fastbreak layup. However, Goffredo struck again with another three-pointer to give Harvard a double-digit lead at 59-49 with 13:40 left.
Key sign it was over With Harvard holding a seven-point lead with just under 90 seconds left, the Crimson hit 4 of its next 6 at the line. Meanwhile, the Blackbirds missed two shots and committed a turnover, as Harvard built its lead up to 12 inside of the final minute. After two Tyrone Mattison free throws, Goffredo fed Cusworth for a layup to give Harvard an insurmountable 86-74 lead with just over 30 seconds remaining.
Key performance Goffredo had a big game, leading all scoreres with 27 points on 8-of-15 shooting — including 5 of 10 from three. The senior guard grabbed four rebounds, dished out two assists, and swiped a steal in 31 minutes without a turnover.
Key statistic The Crimson made 13 of 17 free throws in the final 8:19 — including a 6-for-6 performance by Goffredo — to maintain a comfortable lead.
