Please, before you write that alarmist column bemoaning the coming apocalypse that is Ivy League men’s basketball, please pause, take a deep breath, step away from the ledge, and do some research. Sure, Dartmouth losing 83-32 at Allen Fieldhouse isn’t exactly the kind of publicity you’d want if you were Jeff Orleans or Josie Harper. But as far as extracting any deep meaning from that game, it’s tough to take away much more than the fact that the Big Green’s second team can’t hang with the fifth-ranked team in the country on that team’s home court. Not exactly earth-shattering stuff.

Key sequence: In the final minute of regulation, with the game tied 66-66, Brad Unger was called for a handcheck on Jermaine Anderson, one of the top free throw shooters in the nation last season. Anderson hit both ends of the one-and-one, giving New Hampshire a two-point lead. Anderson fouled Drew Housman at the other end, and the Harvard point guard hit both free throws to knot the game again with 41 seconds left. However, Anderson put the Wildcats back on top with a jumper in the paint with 14 ticks left. After a timeout, Harvard fed the ball inside to Brian Cusworth, who spun and banked in the equalizer with just 5 seconds left on the clock. UNH missed a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer and the game went into overtime.

Key sequence: When Keith Simmons finished off a fastbreak with a layup to put Holy Cross up by 10 with 3:06 left, things looked bleak for Yale. But Eric Flato answered with a layup at the other end, and Travis Pinick blocked an Alex Vander Baan shot, then converted a layup of his own to cut the deficit to six. Alexander Zampier came up with a steal, and after a timeout, Sam Kaplan was the latest participant in the layup line, drawing the Bulldogs to within 56-52 with 1:30 left. Vander Baan misfired on a three-pointer, but Simmons grabbed the offensive rebound and Yale was forced to foul. Torey Thomas hit just one of two free throws, but Tim Clifford blocked Pinick’s shot and Vander Baan controlled the rebound. The Bulldogs fouled Doherty, who hit both shots from the line to move the margin back to seven points with 38 seconds left.

Key sequence: Kansas won the opening tip and threw down an alley oop dunk on its first possession, 11 seconds into the game. A shorthanded Dartmouth lineup couldn’t do much of anything offensively against the tough Jayhawk defense, while the hosts rolled up an 18-2 run to start the game. The Big Green wouldn’t hit its second field goal of the contest until nearly the midpoint of the first half.
