The Daily Pennsylvanian reports Glen Miller is bringing Chris Sparks and Perry Bromwell on board as assistant coaches. The pair joins Mike Martin on the staff, with Sparks as the top assistant and Bromwell assuming volunteer assistant duties. Sparks assisted Miller at Brown back in 2003-04 and coached under Miller’s friend, Howie Dickenman, this past season at Central Connecticut. He brings with him an extensive recruiting network in the Northeast after serving as the director of The Hoop Group’s Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic from 2004 to 2005. Bromwell is a former three-time First Team All-Ivy selection and 1986-87 Ivy League Player of the Year at Penn after transferring from Manhattan following his freshman year. After being drafted in the sixth round by the New Jersey Nets, Bromwell played professionally overseas and has coaching experience in the amateur and professional ranks.

The Ithaca Journal reports Cornell senior Jason Hartford underwent surgery to repair a broken navicular bone in his foot. The junior college transfer suffered the injury during Ivy League play last season and missed the final weekend. He stayed off the foot since the season, but it didn’t heal, so the surgical procedure was performed on June 13. Recovery is expected to take three to six months, which means Hartford could miss the first month of the season. The 6-9, 230-pound Hartford is a projected starter at power forward for the Big Red, whose season opener is scheduled for November 10 at Northwestern.

After a seven-week search, multiple sources have confirmed Brown is set to announce the hiring of Northwestern assistant Craig Robinson as its next men’s basketball coach. The decision will be made official at a press conference in Providence at 9:00 am on Thursday morning. Robinson comes to College Hill after six seasons on the bench in Evanston under Bill Carmody, where he helped turn around a historically lousy Northwestern program. Prior to that he had re-entered the coaching ranks at the University of Chicago High School in 1999-2000 after working in the financial sector for a decade. A 1983 Princeton graduate, Robinson ranks fourth on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,441 points during a career that saw him win a pair of Ivy League Player of the Year awards.

Multiple sources familiar with the Brown head coaching search have said a decision is imminent, with an announcement expected in the next 24 to 48 hours. The position has been vacant since April 26, when Glen Miller accepted the Penn job. Princeton grad and current Northwestern assistant Craig Robinson and Williams coach Dave Paulsen are the two names attracting the most attention, but Paul Cormier, a former Ivy League head coach at Dartmouth with New England ties is a dark horse candidate as well.

Columbia coach Joe Jones added a fifth member to his recruiting Class of 2006, securing a commitment from Wesley Matthews, a 6-3 shooting guard out of South Cobb High School in Georgia. Matthews was reported to be involved with Harvard after scholarship offers failed to materialize. He played with the Atlanta Celtics AAU team founded by the late Wallace Prather Jr., the father of former Cornell player Wallace Prather III .
